What's the point of the zoom slider?

What's the point of the zoom slider? All it does is zoom in on one point of the screen o.o...... why can't you make it zoom in on the last place you clicked or something

Hold CTRL and then click the screen, you will then be able to drag yourself around the screen while zoomed
